Civil Engineering |
The successful completion of individual residential and commercial facilities for the Navajo Nation begins with careful site planning and comprehensive infrastructure design. Significant consideration must be given to utilities when planning for and designing a new or improved site. The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority Civil Engineering team of experienced professionals is well suited and broadly disciplined to provide expertise in any development project. The department has engineers and engineering technicians on staff who are widely experienced in providing a full range of services that include, design, economic analysis, site assessment, CAD design, and representation at public and regulatory meetings - disciplines all necessary for successful site planning and infrastructure design. The NTUA Civil Engineering services also include operation and maintenance for distribution, collection and treatment systems. Project management and contract administration functions complement these services. NTUA expertise also includes a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS database will improve overall water and wastewater operations by providing an overall view of water and wastewater utilities. |

Electrical Engineering |
The delivery of modern electrical service to the Navajo Nation is an ongoing challenge; therefore, the NTUA Headquarters Electrical Engineering Department, guides NTUA districts and sub-offices with necessary electric engineering support. The NTUA Electrical Engineering department, organized within the Engineering and Technical Services Division (E&TS), provides overall electric planning for the efficient and safe operation of electric utilities, including offering expertise in areas of design, power, material and services procurement, and recommendation in the development of specifications and construction of electric power systems. NTUA serves almost 40,000 customers over an area larger than the state of West Virginia, and accomplishes that task with a per unit rate that is less than in many cities where customer density is 35 consumers per mile, compared to 5.5 consumers per mile for NTUA. The department, staffed with engineers, technicians, and administrative employees, also addresses questions related to utility rights-of-way, project coordination, statistical and operational needs. Natural Gas |
The Natural Gas Engineering Department is one of four engineering departments under the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority's Engineering and Technical Services Division. The NTUA gas department provides the cleanest burning fossil fuel, natural gas, to over 7,000 meters within the Navajo Nation. Many of the Navajo people still haul wood and propane to achieve the same luxury as residents of large cities who, with just a flick of a switch, have hot showers and direct heat to their homes. The NTUA gas department consists of engineers, technicians, gas meter mechanical journeymen, and a cathodic technician. Together, the team strives to continue to provide the safest designs, specifications, planning, gas scheduling, operation and maintenance, and efficient products and services to commercial and residential customers. NTUA has reached several milestones through extending natural gas services to the eastern Navajo community of Crownpoint, N.M., and providing an alternate fuel for the NTUA fleet with a natural gas fueling station. In addition, the Questar Project has brightened the gas line future of NTUA with the capability of expanding natural gas to the Western Navajo and the neighboring Hopi Tribe, which will more than double the existing NTUA natural gas customer base. As we say here at NTUA "Keep Safe and Warm With Natural Gas". |

GIS/GPS |
The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority GIS/GPS (Geographic Information System/Global Positioning System) Department resides within the Engineering and Technical Services Division. The GIS/GPS Department creates and maintains spatial information to aid in the creation of maps and data analysis to support NTUA departments, districts, Navajo Nation departments/agencies and individual NTUA customers. The GIS database provides a complete inventory of data layers available for electric, natural gas, solar energy, wastewater treatment, water and other useful information. Current base map layers include property parcels, transportation, landmarks, and buildings. One-foot aerial photography, DEM (Digital Elevation Model), DOQQ's (Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangle), and DRG (Digital Raster Graphic) are available for the entire Navajo Nation. Maps and related data can be provided to users, customers, or contractors on physical media (plots and photocopies) or as electronic files on CD-ROM for a nominal fee.
