Ya’ateeh. We thank you for visiting this web page to seek more information about the 2007 electric rate increase.
We are the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority. You know us as NTUA. And, you know us as the people who bring you electricity, water and natural gas and wastewater treatment services. We also make available solar energy services - for those living too far from our electrical lines.
Just to give you some history, NTUA started as a tribal department in 1959. Then in 1966, NTUA was set up as a tribal enterprise. We are directed by a seven-member Management Board and governed by a Plan of Operations that is approved by the Navajo Nation Council. NTUA utility rates are set by our Management Board, following procedures set by our Tariff, which is a set of regulations for utility operations. That’s just a bit of history of how NTUA was created and how it is managed.
We have worked hard since 1992 to keep the rates as low as they are now; however, the cost of conducting business is not the same as it was then. The last time NTUA had an electrical rate increase was in 1992.
Through these web pages, we would like to show you how your dollars help us to maintain utility services, including any improvements and replacements of aging systems. The revenue coming in has to help us cover the operational expenses; therefore, leading to an increase in electric rates. The study conducted by R.W. Beck, an independent professional engineering consulting firm, supports the recommended rate increase (see Rate Study attachment).
We also want you to know that since 1959 - the customer base for NTUA has grown to more than 38,000 electric customers. The Navajo Nation is developing in many ways and families are expanding; therefore, the need for utility services continues to grow. Even as we work hard to meet this demand, inflation and rising costs continue to impact our operations.
We appreciate your business and it is our hope that we have explained to your understanding why NTUA is implementing new electric rates. It is our sincere belief that together, customers and NTUA will be Working Together to Build a Brighter Future. |
